Communications Coordinator

The Alliance for Youth Action (along with our sister 501(c)(3) organization, the Alliance for Youth Organizing) is searching for a Communications Coordinator to support the Alliance’s traditional and digital communications. This role reports to the Chief of Staff, and is a full-time position based in the United States (see Logistics, below). Alliance for Youth Organizing is a unionized workplace, and staff are represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, Local 32035; this position is a part of the bargaining unit.

About the Alliance for Youth Action

The Alliance convenes, supports, and scales a national network of youth-led, locally rooted organizations growing civic engagement and social justice coast to coast. We truly are a multiracial network “of young people, by young people, for all people.” Our Affiliates and Partners run massive voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, train new young leaders, and run powerful campaigns to win on the progressive issues our generation cares about most. Our national team empowers this work by tracking down national resources for the network, building capacity for local groups, seeding new efforts, and coordinating national issue campaigns.

Job Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of this position include:

Social Media Asset Development & Platform Management (40%)

  • Create and post compelling written and visual content across the Alliance’s social media accounts (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, X/Twitter), in support of the Alliance’s digital strategy to uplift and amplify our Network.
  • Maintain the social media editorial calendar, and collaborate with internal and Network stakeholders to ensure the successful amplification of key moments, milestones, and announcements.
  • Work with communications vendor to adjust digital strategy and output as necessary, especially in response to major changes in the organizing or electoral landscapes, or relevant changes in platforms.

Email Program Management (20%)

  • Draft emails for the Alliance’s email program, developing an editorial calendar and content to support the Alliance’s email strategy.
  • Work with internal and Network stakeholders to ensure the successful amplification of key moments, milestones, and announcements.
  • Conduct regular monitoring of the Alliance’s email lists to identify audience segments and ensure the Alliance’s email messages are reaching the desired audiences.
  • Monitor and report on email performance metrics, providing analysis for optimizing message and program performance and strategies. Work with communications vendor to inform on observed metrics and weigh in on how best to move the email strategy forward.

Press and Public Relations (25%)

  • Work with the Alliance’s communications vendor to monitor current events and identify opportunities for the Alliance to speak in the press or drive a narrative when those events connect to organizational and Network priorities.
  • Shepherd requests through the Alliance Network when there are press opportunities or rapid response moments
  • Serve as the Alliance’s liaison between the communications vendor and internal stakeholders to identify opportunities, moments, narratives, and stories from our Network to uplift in traditional and digital media.

Website Updates and Project Management (15%)

  • Update the text of the Alliance’s websites to maintain current information about the Alliance’s programs and the work of our Network.
  • Work with website vendor to get more technical website updates made as needed.
  • Manage website vendor to ensure planned work is on track and being completed according to schedule.

Key Qualifications & Experience

We’re looking for candidates with particular strengths in the following areas:

  • At least two years of experience in social media management and content creation, preferably in a non-profit, campaign, or political organization.
  • Proven track record of creating compelling written and visual social media content.
  • Strong understanding of the power of traditional and digital communications to shape public narratives and organizing goals.
  • Excellent written communications skills for a variety of platforms, media, and audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize tasks in line with organizational goals.
  • A personal understanding and demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity, and a desire to uplift the leadership of BIPOC young people.
  • Comfort with technology and virtual communication systems, including Zoom, Google Hangouts, Slack, Asana, etc. Proficiency in Excel and/or Google Sheets.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience making text updates on WordPress templates and websites
  • Experience with EveryAction email platform and action pages
  • Experience writing emails for a non-profit, campaign, or political organization
  • Video skills
  • Knowledge of the national and/or state media landscape(s)
  • Experience drafting press releases, op-eds, or quotes from organizational principals or surrogates.
  • Understanding of 501c3 and 501c4 compliance.


  • Compensation: $55,319 – $65,000 per year commensurate with experience.

  • Location: This is a full-time position based in the United States. All Alliance staff are required to live within about an hour from major airports in most US states; more detail will be provided to finalists as relevant. Moving reimbursements are offered to employees who need to move for this position.
  • Travel: Domestic travel for this role may be up to 10% of this position. Must be willing to work long, irregular hours periodically and travel as needed.
  • COVID-19: The Alliance currently requires employees to be fully vaccinated and boosted in order to travel on behalf of the Alliance. Additionally there may be vaccine requirements for attendees at Alliance, Network, or partner events.
