Washington – As we celebrate Black History Month, Alliance for Youth Action – a multiracial network focused on building youth power across the country – shares a moment to recognize the legacy of Black youth activists and organizers who have shaped this nation throughout history and the Black youth organizers who are currently shaping our future.
Dakota Hall, Executive Director for the Alliance for Youth Action, released the following statement:
“Each Day, the Alliance Network celebrates Black people, our rich history, and our strength as a bedrock of society. Black History Month marks a collective pause to recognize the achievements Black people have realized and the fights that continue to occur in pursuit of a more equitable world. In the face of police brutality and the historical erasure of Black people in this country, there must be action taken to protect Black people and their futures.
“The beginning of this year’s Black History Month coincides with vile images of another young, Black man’s death at the hands of police. Make no mistake – Tyre Nichols should be alive today. Instead, he was killed at the hands of a criminal justice system that seeks to protect police at the cost of Black lives. We celebrate his life, mourn his death, and commit ourselves completely to mobilizing the largest group of Black activists and organizers in generations to fight to end police brutality and white supremacy.
“Black people, especially Black youth, serve as the moral compass in our nation. As we celebrate their history this month, we will follow their lead as we fight for true justice and a more equitable world where Black and young people are free to live their lives without fear and without limits.”
