The Alliance for Youth Action Stands with Ohio Organizing Collaborative After Federal Raids
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following the June 11 federal raids on the Ohio Organizing Collaborative (OOC), the Alliance for Youth Action (AYA) is standing in solidarity with OOC and condemns the FBI and Department of Justice’s actions as a politically motivated attack designed to intimidate organizers and suppress turnout among Black and brown voters.
The Ohio Organizing Collaborative is home to the Ohio Student Association (OSA), an Alliance for Youth Action Affiliate.
The Alliance for Youth Action released the following statement:
“For twenty years, the Ohio Organizing Collaborative has helped Ohioans exercise their fundamental freedom to vote and build civic power among working families, young people, and Black and brown communities across the state. Sending more than 100 federal agents to raid the homes and offices of voter registration organizers is intimidation, not law enforcement. This is a calculated effort to instill fear and silence communities whose voices have long been pushed out of political power.
“Make no mistake: when the government targets organizations that help people register, vote, and organize, it is attempting to decide who gets to participate in democracy. In America, voters choose their leaders — not the other way around. The Alliance for Youth Action stands firmly with OOC, OSA, and every community across Ohio that refuses to be intimidated out of building a democracy that belongs to everyone.”
Leaders in Ohio are calling for a Voter Registration Day of Action on Thursday, June 18. We encourage organizations across the country to join in solidarity and organize voter registration activities in their own communities. When efforts are made to discourage civic engagement, we respond by helping more people get involved through more organizing and greater participation. The best response to intimidation is refusing to back down.
