WASHINGTON — With reports of the Biden Administration currently planning to cancel $10,000 in student debt per borrower, the Alliance for Youth Action calls on President Biden to be bold and cancel ALL student debt.
Dakota Hall, Executive Director for Alliance for Youth Action, said:
“The Alliance for Youth Action calls on President Biden to dream bigger than $10,000 per borrower and cancel all student loan debt. Canceling $10,000 is not enough to address the racial wealth gap exacerbated by the student debt crisis and will not help those in most need of relief, especially the 86% of Black students who take out federal student loans. Biden has fallen short of his campaign promise, and Gen-Z and Millennial voters who delivered his victory in 2020 expect bold action on debt cancellation ahead of the midterm elections this fall.
We also demand cancellation with no means-testing nor income cap, so every borrower qualifies for student loan forgiveness. Means-testing and income caps will add an expensive and burdensome hurdle for borrowers to prove their earnings. This additional barrier will only benefit a small proportion of borrowers while preventing the most vulnerable populations from receiving relief. And until student loan cancellation is delivered, the moratorium on student loan payments must remain in place.
On behalf of the youth organizers in the Alliance Network who have been fighting for student loan cancellation for years, the young people across this nation, and the future of our country, we demand President Biden dream big and cancel all student loan debt.”
